How does children's tea work in a catered chalet?
Most catered chalets are built around a single evening meal for the whole house. With young children, that dinner often comes too late, so several operators in Samoëns serve the children first: a simpler meal in the early evening, followed by the adults' dinner once the little ones are fed, bathed or in bed.
What is included varies from one chalet to the next: the time, the number of courses, the nights it is served, and the age at which a child moves to the adult table. Check each point in writing before you book.
- Pure Chalets: two-course children's high tea at around 6pm
- Adults at Pure Chalets: four-course evening meal on five nights of the week
- Chalet APASSION: children's supper if required, in the winter package
- APASSION child rates: 15% off for a child aged 2 to 13 in their own room
Pure Chalets: a 6pm high tea
Pure Chalets, which runs Chalet Bobeau in Samoëns, serves children an earlier two-course high tea at around 6pm, with familiar dishes such as spaghetti bolognaise, homemade chicken nuggets and wedges, beef burgers and fries, or chicken pasta bake. The operator asks parents to say in advance which foods their child likes.
Adults and older teenagers sit down to a four-course evening meal on five nights of the week. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, dairy-free and gluten-free diets are catered for if you give details when booking. At Chalet Bobeau itself, a games room with a pool table and table football keeps children busy between tea and bedtime.
Chalet APASSION: a children's supper on request
Chalet APASSION's winter package includes afternoon tea on seven days and a three-course dinner on five nights, plus a children's supper if required. For summer stays, the operator says specific children's meals are available and are agreed as part of the booking process.
The chalet's in-resort concierge can arrange nannies and crèche care. Children aged 2 to 13 in their own room get a 15% discount; in summer, children under 13 are normally accepted only on sole-occupancy bookings, at the operator's discretion.
What to ask before you book
Send the operator a short list of questions, and keep the answers with your booking confirmation.
Good to know: if your children ski in the morning group lessons, ask whether children's tea can move earlier on the first evening, when everyone is tired after the journey.
- What time is children's tea, and on which nights?: Adult dinners are often served on five nights only, and children's meals may follow the same pattern.
- Up to what age does it apply?: Older children and teenagers usually join the adults' menu.
- Can the menu be adapted?: Allergies, fussy eaters and special diets need notice before arrival.
- Are cots, high chairs or childcare available?: Some chalets supply equipment; others book nannies or crèches for you.
- Is there a child rate?: Discounts depend on age and on whether the child has their own room.
