Catered chalet or hotel half-board in Samoëns: what each includes

In Samoëns, a catered chalet week usually covers breakfast, afternoon tea and five dinners in seven nights, served in a chalet your group has to itself, often with a lift shuttle. Hotel half-board covers breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant, with the flexibility of a room rather than a whole chalet. Check how many dinners, which days and what children eat before comparing prices.

What a catered chalet week includes

Catered chalets in Samoëns are sold by the week or by the night, with the cooking done for you. At Chalet APASSION, the winter package covers breakfast and afternoon tea every day, canapés and a three-course dinner on five nights, local tourist tax and a shuttle to the lifts before 10am and from 4pm to 6.30pm. Breakfast has no hot option on the staff day off, and winter stays need at least four nights.

PureChalets runs Chalet Bobeau, eight bedrooms and under five minutes' walk from the lift according to the operator, on a similar pattern: breakfast, afternoon tea and five dinners, with Sunday changeovers.

  • Dinners in a catered week (APASSION): 5 of 7 nights
  • APASSION minimum winter stay: 4 nights
  • Hotel formulas at Le Gai Soleil: B&B, half-board or studio

What hotel half-board includes

Half-board in a hotel means breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant, usually every night you stay. Le Gai Soleil, a three-star hotel in the village, lets you choose between bed and breakfast, half-board or a studio with a kitchenette, according to its tourist office listing. At La Boule de Neige in Vercland, 100 m from the gondola, the half-board rates on its listing are free for children under two and half price from two to five.

The differences that matter

The first difference is space: a catered chalet is yours for the week, with a lounge for the whole group, while a hotel gives each family its own room and shared public areas. The second is the timetable: a chalet host serves at set times and has a night off, so two evenings out are part of the plan; a hotel restaurant serves every night.

The third is children. Ask a chalet operator whether there is an early children's meal, and ask a hotel about child rates and family rooms.

Good to know: compare like with like: count the dinners included and the nights you will eat out, then add those meals to the cheaper-looking quote.

Which one suits your group?

A catered chalet suits a single group of friends or families who want to spend evenings together and leave the shopping and cooking to someone else. Half-board suits couples, smaller families or groups who want a daily restaurant dinner and more freedom over room sizes. Either way, confirm in writing what the price covers, including tourist tax and lift transport.

Children's tea and early dinners in catered chalets

In a Samoëns catered chalet, children usually eat earlier than the adults. Pure Chalets serves a two-course children's high tea at around 6pm, with adults dining later on five nights; Chalet APASSION offers a children's supper on request and agrees specific children's meals at booking. Ask about timing, menus and age limits before you pay the deposit.
