Airport transfers in a catered package: reading the small print

Many catered chalet weeks in Samoëns mention an airport transfer, but the wording varies: included, shared, on request or at extra cost. Geneva airport is about an hour by road, so the details matter more than the headline. Here is what to ask before you pay the deposit, and three transfer operators listed by the Samoëns tourist office if you need to book your own.

What "transfer included" can mean

In a catered package, the word transfer can cover very different services. Some hosts run a shared minibus at fixed times on changeover day; others book a private car for your group; others only recommend a company and let you pay it directly. Ask which of these applies before comparing two chalet prices, because the gap can be larger than a dinner out.

Ask also whether the transfer is included in both directions. A package can include the arrival on Saturday afternoon but leave the departure to you, which matters if your flight home leaves early in the morning.

  • Geneva airport to Samoëns: a little over 60 km, about one hour on a clear road
  • Public transport alternative: Léman Express to Cluses, then regional coach Y94
  • Winter road rule: winter tyres or chains carried, 1 November to 31 March

Five lines to find in the confirmation

Before paying the deposit, look for these points in writing, not just in a brochure.

  • Pick-up point: Geneva airport French sector or Swiss side, or a railway station such as Cluses.
  • Timing: fixed shuttle slots or a pick-up matched to your landing time, and how long the driver waits if the flight is late.
  • Luggage: number of suitcases per person, ski or snowboard bags, pushchairs and child seats.
  • Price basis: per person, per vehicle or per journey, and any surcharge for night arrivals.
  • Cancellation: what happens to the transfer if the flight is cancelled or rerouted.

Booking your own transfer

If the package does not include it, the tourist office lists several transport companies serving Geneva airport. Transport Go Massif links the airport with Samoëns, Morillon and other Grand Massif villages and asks for your flight details at booking. Alps Transfert runs an eight-passenger minivan by reservation, which suits a single family or a small group. Alps-direct.com, based in Morillon, covers airports, railway stations and transfers between resorts for individuals and groups.

Prices are not published in a comparable form, so send each operator the same request: number of passengers, luggage and ski bags, landing time and the chalet address. Compare the written quotes rather than the price per person quoted on the phone.

If you prefer the train or a hire car

Without a transfer, the public route is the Léman Express from Geneva to Cluses, then the Y94 regional coach to the Grand Massif Express stop in Samoëns. Services are few outside peak periods and the coach does not run on Sundays on the autumn timetable, so check the winter timetable before choosing your flight.

With a hire car, remember the Haute-Savoie winter rule: from 1 November to 31 March, a car must have four winter tyres or carry chains or snow socks. Ask the rental company which equipment the car has when you collect it.

Good to know: send your flight numbers to the chalet host and the transfer company at the same time, so both know when to expect you.

Children's tea and early dinners in catered chalets

In a Samoëns catered chalet, children usually eat earlier than the adults. Pure Chalets serves a two-course children's high tea at around 6pm, with adults dining later on five nights; Chalet APASSION offers a children's supper on request and agrees specific children's meals at booking. Ask about timing, menus and age limits before you pay the deposit.
